Just a thought, are any of you folks familiar with the works of the sculptor K Snelson.
Or the idea of floating compression structures.
Although not ideal for buildings, it should work well for sculpture racing.

As anyone tried to use the work of the artist Theo Jansen for a racer, in particular strandbeest.
http://www.strandbeest.com/film_ted.php
He give instructions on how to make the legs, what lengths the various poles need to be at the bottom of the page here. http://www.strandbeest.com/beests_leg.php
if you did, how well did it work.

If you are looking for an idea for decorating an existing vehicle, may I suggest you have a look at the net sculptures of J Echelman. Or something like Octo by A Howe.

I have made a little model of the Strandbeests leg, using straws and sticky tape. For this simple model take 2 straws cut them in half, tape them together to make a floppy square. From one side of this square loosely tape 2 straws to make a triangle, do the same again on the opposite side of the square. Tape 2 straws flexibly end to end. Tape one end of this to the point where one of the triangles meets the square and the other end to the far point of the other triangle. The Y shaped junction near the centre is the pivot that fastens the leg to the body, and the crank would be the point of the largest triangle.
