Sculpture Parts For Free (and some for sale)

Post by captainactionpat »

This is Captain Action Pat of CAP Kinetic. We have grown tired of finding a place to store our big sculpture, so we are scrapping it with the intention of building several smaller sculptures. All components will have to be picked up in Overlea (Baltimore County, Northeast corner 0f 695). If you have corporate sponsorhip, we would love some cash for certain parts to help fund the new sculpture build. 50% of whatever we bought them for is the initial asking price, but consider that EXTREMELY NEGOTIABLE.

We have tons of free bike parts. We have killed many bicycles over the years and need to clear out some storage. We have an absurd amount of cranks (175mm) and pedals, and all sorts of other hacked up components. We also have a pretty solid source to get you a whole bicycle or two if you are starting from scratch.

We are looking to re-home our 36" Tires. We have four of them plus a spare. They are made of drainage pipe (HDPE) with cable spokes mounted on trailer hubs (4 bolts on 4" circle). They have been stuffed with sprayfoam in order to serve as floatation/rudders. Each wheel displaces 200 pounds, if fully submerged. Each wheel cost us at least $100 to make. BUT if you lack that kind of funding, you can have them for free (FOR THE GLORY!).

Styrofoam- We used 12x18x18 styrofoam blocks for the rest of our floatation. We sprayfoamed a bunch together and may have some untouched blocks left as well. You can take whatever you want for free.

Axles/suspension. We have spare 3/4" and 1" pillow blocks and small sections of keyed shafting. Off the big sculpture- The axles for the giant wheels are available, but we have way too much money in them to let them go for free. 6 feet of 1" cold rolled keyed shafting cost $250 two years ago, I can't imagine how much it is now. The axles mount to the frame via leaf springs and will be included. We might reuse the rear axle in the future build. The front axle is definitely up for grabs. It is modeled after a Jeep's front axle. We had it on a 4 person sculpture, but its so overbuilt it could probably support an 8 person sculpture. It has hydraulic brake rotors actuated from a car's brake pedal/master cylinder. If you hook it up to a 12v vacuum pump ($30 on amazon), you'll have power brakes. We have at least $400 wrapped up in the brake system alone. The steering box is out of a toyota pickup truck. The guy that gave it to us has asked for it back, but I could probably buy it off him for you if you wanted the complete front end. Unfortunately, all that overkill comes at a heavy price. Literally, heavy... as in, it weighs a lot. we did alright with 4 people, but 6 would be ideal for that much weight. If the axles don't find a new human powered owner I hope to use them to build an electric dune buggy. But I have enough projects already, so please come check them out.

In addition to all this stuff, I keep in contact with most of the other Captains. If you are looking for specific parts or have questions on how to make parts, I'm happy to help or refer you to someone else who can.

Happy Building!
